Bhubaneswar: City of Temples
Your journey begins in Bhubaneswar, aptly named the “Temple Town.” This unique city boasts a remarkable legacy, evident in its numerous temples and caves scattered throughout the urban landscape. Unlike other pilgrimage centers, Bhubaneswar seamlessly integrates ancient monuments with modern life. Here, towering temples stand proudly amidst bustling streets, creating a captivating contrast.
A Curated Itinerary for the Discerning Traveler
Day 1: Arrival and Cultural Immersion
Upon arrival at Bhubaneswar airport, drive straight to Svanir (40mins), your welcoming haven. After a warm family welcome and a home-cooked lunch, we head to Kalabhoomi Odisha Crafts Museum. The museum celebrates the craftsmanship of Odia artisans by putting on display their breath-taking masterpieces. Divided into 2 blocks, the museum has a display area and a live section. The display area focuses on galleries about Handicrafts and Handlooms from around the state while the live section is equipped with an open air theatre as well as separate workshop zones.

Day 2: Unveiling Bhubaneswar’s Treasures
After a relaxed breakfast. we head into the heart of Bhubaneswar; Ekamra Kshetra (Old Town area). Prepare to be captivated by the sheer number of temples that have earned the city its moniker. Explore the architectural marvels of Lingaraj Temple, Mukteswar Temple, Pasuramenswar Temple, Ananta Basudev, Chitrakarini Temple, and the Raja Rani Temple. Each structure is a testament to Odisha’s artistic legacy and devotion.
Insider’s Tip: There is a wonderful herbal garden, were you can relax and enjoy looking at the silhouette of Lingaraj Temple and other smaller temples from across the Bindusagar Pond.
We stop for lunch at a local Odia restaurant, or opt for a lighter fare at a charming cafe. Post lunch, we head to the fascinating rock-cut caves of Khandagiri and Udayagiri. These ancient sanctuaries, carved sometime between the 1st and 2nd centuries BC, were havens for Jain monks. The caves also hold the fascinating lithic record of King Kharavela’s reign.

Day 3: Exploring Nature’s Bounty: Mangalojodi Wetlands
After a relaxed breakfast, embark on a peaceful walk through the village surrounding Svanir. Immerse yourself in the local way of life as you interact with welcoming villagers who might even invite you for a cup of tea.
A quick lunch and we head to Mangalajodi (1.5hrs) The afternoon beckons you to Mangalajodi, a haven for nature enthusiasts. This small wetland, boasting an area of just 10 square kilometers, transforms into a winter paradise for over 300,000 migratory birds. Glide through the tranquil waters on a boat ride and witness the breathtaking spectacle of avian diversity.
Among the various bird species that winter in the Mangalajodi marshes are babblers, bee-eaters, coots, cormorants and shags, crakes, egrets and bitterns, grebes, geese and ducks, gulls and terns, herons, ibises, jacanas, kingfishers, larks, moorhens, munias, partridges, pheasants, prinias, quails, rails, raptors, robins, sparrows, starlings and mynahs, storks, swallows, swifts, thrushes, waders, wagtails and pipits, warblers, and weavers.

Day 4: Unveiling Puri and Konark’s Splendor
A leisurely breakfast precedes your journey to Puri, a 2-hour drive away. Before reaching your destination, delve into the vibrant art scene at Raghurajpur, a village renowned for its exquisite Pattachitra paintings. These traditional works of art, dating back centuries, depict scenes from Hindu mythology and folklore using natural colors on cloth or palm leaves. Immerse yourself in the village’s artistic heritage, witnessing crafts like palm leaf engraving, wood and stone carvings, papier mache, and the creation of charming cow dung toys and masks.
Continuing your journey, embark on a scenic drive along the marine drive to reach Konark, home to the Sun Temple. This awe-inspiring monument, bathed in the golden rays of the rising sun, stands as a majestic representation of Surya, the Sun God’s chariot. Marvel at the intricate carvings adorning its 24 wheels and the powerful team of six horses pulling the chariot.
Insiders’ Tip: Don’t miss stopping at the Interpretation Centre at the entrance of Konark to better understand what you are about to see inside. This will significantly enhance your appreciation for the temple’s history, symbolism, and architectural significance.

For those with more time, a visit to the Odisha State Tribal Museum (formerly the Museum of Tribal Art and Artefacts) is highly recommended. Established in 1953, this renowned museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives and cultures of Odisha’s 62 tribal communities. Located in Bhubaneswar, it is considered one of the best tribal museums in India. It provides invaluable insights into the diverse traditions, art, and heritage of these unique communities.
