Mangalajodi – A Winter Birder’s Paradise

Planning a Manglajodi birding trip? Read this practical guide for boat tours, bird species, what to pack, and local stay options near Puri.

Mangalajodi is a small village in Orissa situated at a distance of about 70 km from the capital city of Bhubaneswar. This village on the banks of Chilika Lake renders an eye-catching scenic beauty and attracts visitors for its vast wetlands with many migrating birds.

Take a tour on county boats meandering through narrow marshy waterways spotting variety of migratory birds which flock to Chilika during winters ( November- March ). The wetland is spread approximately in a 10sq km area.

Entry into Mangalajodi

An early morning ride to this magical place takes about 1.5 hrs from Svanir. In winters the sunrise in the water is around 06:30hrs The early morning light with birds on the water shroud in a light mist is an ethereal sight. If early mornings are not your cup of tea, there is an afternoon boat ride as well where you enjoy a sunset on the water before heading back to dry land.

List of Migratory Birds

Some pictures from my recent trip to this wetland which is also classified as an Important Bird Area (IBA).
